what is counselling?

Counsellors are an important part of the mental health field alongside psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners and social workers.

Counsellors may practice independently or work side by side with other mental health professionals in institutional settings.

Counsellors help their clients gain insight into their problems and acquire skills to manage and overcome them.

Also known as clinical counsellors, mental health counsellors, professional counsellors, psychotherapeutic counsellors etc. in different jurisdictions, counsellors register with one of four professional associations in British Columbia:

  • Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists (ACCT)

  • BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC)

  • Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA)

  • Canadian Professional Counsellors’ Association (CPCA)

Graduates of the Rhodes Professional Counselling program usually register with ACCT and CPCA.
