How to prepare for your online session.

Counselling is now available from the convenience of your home. Here are a few things to consider when booking an online session with one of our counsellors.

  • Technology

Make sure that your internet connection is stable and the device you are using is fully charged (or plugged into a power outlet). As counselling requires your full attention, ensure that your phone is on do not disturb mode (if possible) and that you have no other distractions, such as notifications popping up on your computer. Discuss backup options with your counsellor, in case there is a disruption in technology that impacts your session.

  • Setting

You want to be comfortable for your session, so be sure to find a safe and secure space where you have some privacy. If there are others in your home, do let them know that you need some uninterrupted time. Use headphones if you need to drown out any background noise that may distract you from focusing on yourself. Please make sure that you are comfortable, but not too relaxed. Have any props around for support, including water, tissues and a blanket.

  • Aftercare

Although it may be tempting to jump back into your day after session, remember that counselling may bring up emotions. You may want to allow for some processing time after your session to transition back into your day. Online sessions reduce the need for commuting or travel time, but you may want to create a practice to let go of your session and move back into your daily tasks.
