freewriting

Freewriting involves writing down your thoughts, whatever they are, without editing them.  The purpose is to explore your thoughts, feeling and to bring yourself back to the present moment.

To begin:

  1. Set a timer. It can be anywhere from 5-20 minutes to start.

  2. Write everything that comes to mind. It may seem strange or silly, but write whatever comes to mind.

  3. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. Do not interrupt yourself to correct mistakes.

  4. Write until your time is up, even if you’ve run out of things to write about. Write about the feeling of having nothing left to write, or repeat a phrase until something else comes to mind.

  5. Reread your entry after, using it as an opportunity to learn something new or gain insight. You may even write down a few sentence for reflection around what you found surprising.
