Counselling from the Convenience of Home

What to expect from online counselling…

Get comfortable, grab a glass of water, a blanket, turn on your computer or smartphone and you’re ready for your session with your counsellor. It’s that easy. No traffic, no stress of being late. This is your time.

Online therapy is really no different than in-person sessions. In fact, it’s a great option for many people because of its convenience.  Let’s face it, it’s not always easy to get the time to go to an appointment in person.

There’s also the fact you have a greater range of options available to you when looking for a therapist. Online counselling allows you to find someone you connect with from anywhere in the province, not just in the city where you live.

Another advantage of being online is the ability to have sessions at hours that are more convenient for you. And if you’re like many people, you may find it more comfortable talking to someone when you are at home in your own space, not face-to-face in person.  Plus, online video such as JaneApp and Zoom, are compliant with the Canadian Data Protection regulations, ensuring your session is confidential.

Do you need a fancy computer for online therapy?

No.  You should ensure your computer or smart phone has the most up-to-date software and browsers such as Safari or Chrome. For iphones, ipad or Mac, you need IOS 11.0 or later. Windows you need 8.1 or higher.

Do I have to download a special application to use online therapy?

No. You don't need to install any extra software to join an online meeting. You can do it all through a web browser. Click on the meeting invite URL that your counsellor shares with you via email or text.

Are outcomes better in person?

Research has shown that there is no difference in satisfaction from clients whether therapy is online or in-person. Outcomes depend on your relationship with your counsellor, consistency and the number of sessions you attend.

What can you expect from your online counsellor?

Your therapist will listen, be objective, and help you make connections and/or identify recurring patterns. Just as in-person, online therapy can empower you to look at ways to rewrite your story and offer tools to help you take action.  And while it’s encouraged to make additional connections to friends, community support and family for your health and well-being, your relationship with your therapist is different than one with your friend.  There’s no judgement, no unsolicited advice and you don’t have to worry about how unloading your feelings might make them feel.  That’s where your counsellor comes in. It’s a safe place to be heard, for self-discovery, setting personal goals, celebrate achievements, and stay accountable. Therapy can help you make adjustments so you can better meet your self-care needs and develop a variety of coping strategies you can use to improve your well-being.

Seeking support takes strength and courage. The fact that you can do it from your computer, makes reaching out that much easier. Affordable, private, professional and convenient counselling is only a click away.
